Jan was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee on October 19, 1938, to Ivory and Wreatha McQueen as the second of four children. Jan graduated from Elizabethon High School and attended East Tennessee State University where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Jan moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1960 and began working as an RN at All Saints Hospital. She later worked for the Fort Worth Clinic before moving to Dallas as a school nurse for Dallas ISD. While in Dallas, she met and later married Carol Leon “Smokey” Vanover in 1966. Jan and Smokey moved to Colleyville, Texas in the early 1970s were she transitioned from DISD to Director of Health Services for H. E. B. ISD. She continued this role until her retirement in the early 2000s, during which time, she served on numerous board and associations.
Jan enjoyed spending time with her family and tending to her flowers and yard. She traveled extensively in her younger years, which included a cruise on the Queen Elizabeth II that circled the world while spending time with family.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gary and husband Smokey. She is survived by son, Charles and wife Stacie Vanover, granddaughter Ivory Vanover, sisters, Joan Withers and Martha Cobble as well as a host of nieces and nephews. The family will have a private graveside service on May 10, 2024, at 1:00pm at Bluebonnet Hills Cemetery in Colleyville, Texas, followed by a celebration of life in September.
