A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Richland Hills, with Father Nguyen celebrating. Major Cherney will be laid to rest in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park.

John was a pilot for the United States Air Force. During World War II, he was a prisoner of war and also served in Vietnam. After his military service, he started working for American Airlines where he was a flight simulator instructor.
John was the son of Stephen and Mary Cherney. He was one of 13 children.
John is survived by his loving wife, Ann Cherney; children, Stephanie Laughlin, Chris Cherney, Lindsey Davison, Susan Bowen, John P. Cherney II; siblings, Emma Gregorchick, Elizabeth Amato and Veronica Metro; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
