John Hanney Waschka passed away suddenly on December 22, 2024. John was born on September 9, 1966 in Memphis, Tennessee to Patricia and Ronald Waschka. John grew up in Tennessee and Texas and enlisted in the Texas Air National Guard in 1990 and was assigned to the 136th Security Forces Squadron.
Since then, he dedicated most of his life in service to the country. After the events of 9/11 John was called to active duty Air Force and deployed to the Middle East where he served in Operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom and received medals for providing critical security and operational support for the United States Air Force.
Domestically, he was recognized for excellence in his role as a Combat Arms Training Instructor and for aiding rescue, evacuation, and recovery operations after the hurricanes Charley (2004) and Katrina (2005). John served as a member of Active Duty Operational Support until he retired from the military at the rank of Technical Sergeant in 2011, after 21 years, 5 months, and 20 days of service (yes, John was always counting).
John spent the next several years working for the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Department in Fort Worth, Texas until he retired to Colorado in 2023.
John was a fierce patriot immensely proud to serve his country and always ready to protect those who could not protect themselves. An avid gourmand, John enjoyed delighting friends and family with delicious and decadent meals and having spirited discussions about politics, history, movies, or music.
And if you ever wanted a great beer, you could order what John was having, and you’d never go wrong! Most importantly, he deeply loved his family, was proud of his children, and elated about recently becoming a grandpa, “Poppy”.
John is preceded in death by his daughter Anna Marie Waschka and is survived by his children Katilin Espinosa (Erick) and Jamie Waschka, granddaughter Elena, his brother Michael, sisters Anne Marie and Helen Marissa, and many friends and family who will miss him dearly.
A visitation for John will be held Wednesday, January 22, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd, Colleyville, TX 76034.
