Kai Shing Yeung was born in 1948 in Foshan, China. The eldest of seven children, his formative years were in Hong Kong, where he attended an Anglican high school. Upon graduation from the University of Hong Kong, he was awarded a graduate scholarship for a German exchange program. There, he completed both an MS and a PhD at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, with summa cum laude honors. It is in Germany that he met his wife, Kythrine Lue, got married, and had their first child, Jane.
Returning to Hong Kong, Kai then joined the Electrical Engineering faculty at the Hong Kong Chinese University, as well as welcoming his second child, James. A new adventure to the United States brought him first to Drexel University in Philadelphia, and then finally, landing at The University of Texas at Arlington’s department of engineering. For the next 28 years, Kai taught hundreds of students and guided multitudes of graduate candidates, consistently honored with departmental and university-wide teaching awards. Upon retirement in 2013, his service as an educator and academic was ultimately bestowed with the title of Professor Emeritus.
Kai trusted in Christ on the rise of his career and was baptized together with his wife at Arlington Chinese Church (ACC) in 1984. Throughout his faith journey, he served as a small group leader, deacon, church elder, Sunday school teacher, invited speaker and preacher, and instructor at the Bible Training Center for Pastors.
In 2011 he responded to the Lord’s call, setting aside his career for full-time missions to Germany, in partnership with his wife. Coming full-circle to the town where they first met as students, in 2014 they helped to plant the Chinese Evangelical Church in Karlsruhe, Germany. After pastoring the church for five years, Kai and Kythrine returned home to Arlington, Texas for rest and retirement. God unexpectedly called him to serve in a new capacity as the interim senior pastor of ACC.
Kai and Kythrine were married for 49 wonderful years. He is survived by and blessed with a son and a daughter-in-law, James and Rebecca, a daughter and a son-in-law, Jane and Ping, and two granddaughters, Olivia and Alexis, all of whom belong to Christ.
