She would have been 101 years old had she reached her Birthday on September 17, 2026.
Her Family would like to tell you about this lovely and kind lady. She was the only child born to William and Mary Schevemann in 1925 in Kansas City, Kansas. Known as Mary Lou to all her family, she grew up on a small farm during the Depression years. The focus of her family life was in a small Baptist Church where she accepted the Lord as a teenager. Later, she served as president of the Baptist Youth Fellowship in her church.
At 12 years of age, Mary started receiving piano lessons. It was a privilege for her to ride a bus to Kansas City, Kansas to learn these lessons costing 50 cents each. Her teacher taught students to play a Hymn at the close of each lesson. Mary Lou started playing for Sunday School soon after that and later became the church pianist at Brenner Heights Baptist church until the time of her marriage in 1947.
In the years after she graduated from high school, she worked for Commerce Trust Company, Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, Transworld Airlines and in other secretarial positions.
In 1947, Mary and her husband George moved to a farming area in rural Ness County, Kansas. Their first home was located on land that George Washington Carver predicted would someday produce oil. That prediction proved true when an oil producing well was drilled. Their second home was south to the Buda Community. Two stone rooms of the house they lived in served as the Buda Post Office in the Pony Express days. It was while living there, she was pianist for the Sunday School, which was held in the Buda School House. Mary also taught piano lessons to the children who lived in that rural community.
In 1951, twin sons, Darwin and David, were born in Dodge City, Kansas. Mary never wanted to raise a single child and her wishes were granted in the birth of these sons.
In 1960, the family moved to Plainview Texas. While there, she went back to work for a large law firm. During interim periods, between public employments, she taught piano and organ lessons, sewed for the public, her family and friends. Mary was working for another Law Firm as a Legal Assistant when she finally decided to retire.
Mary became a member of First Baptist Church of Euless in 1971. The first Sunday she attended Sunday School, a Pianist was needed in the department of which Blease Tibbets was director. Mary continued to play in her Sunday School department through the years there.
Mary knew the joy of planning fun things to do for her family and friends. She knew the joy of giving and sharing with others. Few people left her home without something in their hands, whether it be food or a craft she had made. She also loved to bargain shop.
After retirement, She volunteered several years as a Tax Aide for the AARP tax program and Care Corp. She was a member of the Sewing Guild and Senior Friends, and enjoyed the classes in the Senior Education program at Tarrant County College as well. Mary also sewed for disadvantaged children in the area and did play the piano in several nursing homes in the area.
In 2003 Mary made a major change in her life when she was 78 years of age. She sold her home in Hurst, Tx. She moved to the retirement community of the Villas on Bear Creek. She soon used her musical talent playing piano for the worship service and Golden Aires choir. She made many new friends through her years there. The residents knew who Mary Merryfield was.
She missed First Baptist in Euless but after attending First Baptist Keller, she found another church home. Again Mary played the piano in the Senior Sunday school department.
In September 2015 she celebrated her 90th birthday at the Villas with her family and friends. This was a joyous time for her. She was lived to be the last living member of her generation of the Schevemann’s.
In October 2024, Mary made another major life change when she was 99 years of age. Mary moved to her final home, Harvest of Roanoke an assisted living facility. Then in October 2025 Mary celebrated her 100th birthday another, joyous occasion. This celebration was attended by family and many friends.
Though Mary faced many difficulties in her final months, Her caretakers and nurses made Mary’s comfort their priority. For this her family is extremely greatful.
Mary loved being mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother and lived 100+ years to hold her great-great granddaughter born in March of 2026.
Mary is survived by: Son Darwin and his wife Cheryl, son David and his wife Susie, Grandchildren Zachary, Amy, Chad and his wife Meghan and Emily. Great-grandchildren Macee, her husband Jay, Maloree, Caleb, Tatum, Eli and Cade. Great-great granddaughter Sunday Rose.
