Mary peacefully went to be with our Lord Jesus on July 10, 2023, in Dallas, Texas. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, and “Granny” to her family and as a devoted Christian, supportive friend, and trusted mentor to those close to her.
Mary was born to Martin and Gertrude O'Connell in Wamego, Kansas on June 28, 1934. She met the love of her life, Dave West, while he was stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas. They were married on May 4, 1956, and they created many beautiful memories with their five sons throughout their nearly 65-year marriage.
During the late 1960s, the West family relocated to North Richland Hills. While there, Mary formed many lifelong friendships through her work at St. John the Apostle Catholic School and American Greetings, where she had a more than 30-year career.
Mary was dedicated to supporting her sons and grandchildren at their various sports and school events – always enthusiastically cheering them on. Although a woman of small stature, Mary was not afraid to let referees and umpires know when they missed a call involving one of her sons or grandchildren.
Granny treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren, especially during weekend sleepovers, and they will forever remember the memories they made with her.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sister, Catherine Baker. She is survived by her five children, David West (Nancy), Doug West (Diane), Mark West (Tammy), Patrick West (Jennifer), and John West (Brooke); grandchildren, Kelly West (Cara), Whitney Reed (Doug), Courtney Ross (Ryan), Claire Walsh (Mitch), Mike West (Katie), Chandler Williamson (Matt), Caroline, Matt, Luke, Cricket, Thomas and Andrew West and Max Palko; 8 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Madison Clark, Loe Bethell, Maria Breumen, and the compassionate nurses from AllStar Hospice.
A Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15th at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home in Colleyville. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 16th at St. John The Apostle Catholic Church in North Richland Hills. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in memory of Mary.
