Mona Brown was born in Woodbine, Cooke County, Texas on December 6, 1928 to the late Robert (Bob) Hulen Bell and Lena Elizabeth Smith Bell who were farmers. Mona contracted polio as a toddler and although she recovered, she felt the effects all her life. She lost her older brother, Randall, to this disease. She attended Concord School, Rad Ware School, and Whitesboro High School before graduating with a B.A. in Economics with Minors in Spanish and Education (leading to a Teacher’s Certification) from Austin College. She worked there as an assistant in the administrative offices and the library, was in the Kappa Gamma Chi Sorority, and also sang in the A Cappella choir in college. She married Lealon Wesley Brown, a newly decorated WWII Marine, on December 9, 1949. The couple moved from Sherman, to Pilot Point, to Fort Worth, to the home in Haltom City where she still lived 70 years later.
Mona’s world was all about her children. With 5 kids spread out over 20 years, she directed traffic and was totally involved in their lives. She was very active and an officer in Browning Heights Elementary PTA, Haltom Junior High PTA, Haltom High PTA, Birdville Council PTA, District I TX PTA, and finally had a Life Membership in the PTA. Mona was also a Haltom High Band Booster. In summers, she helped out in the Northeast Optimist Women’s Auxiliary by working in the summer kids’ baseball concessions stand.
After Lealon retired from Texas Electric and the nest was empty in 1985, Mona went to work in the Birdville Independent School District Administrative offices as an Office Assistant. She worked in various departments for the next ten years until she landed in the Buildings and Grounds department. There she stayed for the next 20 years as an Administrative Assistant until her retirement at the age of 86.
Mona was baptized into Christ’s family in 1942 at the Concord Church of Christ in Woodbine, TX and was a member of the Birdville Church of Christ since 1954. She taught Bible classes when her kids were young.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lealon (marriage of 54 years), her son Mark E. Brown, her brothers - Randall and Landon Bell, her sister Nelda Jean Bell Montgomery and her brother-in-law Charles W. Montgomery, her cats Gustopher, Gus Gus, and Spiderman.
