

Roy was born in Levelland, TX on August 29, 1945, which was also his mother’s birthday. Roy was the third child and eldest son born to Lucille Inez Manney and Roy Eldred Battles. Roy grew up in the panhandle of Texas and graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1963. He lettered in both football and basketball.
After graduation from high school, Roy stayed in West Texas where he attended college at Texas Tech University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1969. Roy then entered Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island for the U. S. Navy. Roy achieved the rank of Lieutenant jg. before being honorably discharged in 1972.
Roy then started a distinguished career with Bell Helicopter-Textron that spanned for over 40 years. He took great pride in his work and interactions with his fellow employees. Roy rose through management and became Vice President of Engineering and Chief Technical Officer. He was well regarded in the aerospace industry for his knowledge and integrity. He was a long–time member of the American Helicopter Society and contributed numerous technical papers both nationally and internationally. Throughout his career, Mr. Battles interacted with military and commercial customers, suppliers, teammates, and associates who valued him as a leading technical expert in helicopter technology and operations. In 2003 he was awarded as a Distinguished Engineer in Mechanical Engineering by Texas Tech, an honor that he was very proud of. Roy retired in 2008.
Upon retirement Roy split time between Colleyville,TX and Pagosa Springs, CO. Roy enjoyed watching his grandson Colson’s soccer and lacrosse games and his granddaughter Peyton’s dance performances. He was a very proud Grandad.
Roy is survived by his wife Rebecca; his two sons Gregory Battles, and Brandon Battles and wife Disney; grandchildren Colson and Peyton Battles; his brother Danny and wife Georgeanna of Chama, NM; brother Rickey Battles of Bakersfield, CA. He was preceded in death by his sisters Delores Battles Earls and Norma Battles Coffee.
A visitation for Roy will be held Sunday, July 14, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd, Colleyville, TX 76034. A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the Bluebonnet Funeral Chapel. All friends, family and colleagues are invited to attend.
