He was born on December 7, 1933, in Dallas, Texas to Roger Quince Mills and Laura (Bassham) Mills. Roy is one of ten children. He is survived by his brother Joe Mills.
Roy lived with the Todd family during his high school years and worked as a ranch hand on their farm in the summer months for his room and board. During the school year he supported himself by driving a school bus and working part-time in the evenings at Burrus Mills & Elevator Co. in Saginaw, Texas.
Roy married Peggy Jackson over Easter weekend, April 3, 1953, their senior year of high school. They shared a three-bedroom, one bath house with two other families off Azle Avenue in Fort Worth. Both Roy and Peggy graduated from Northwest High School in Justin, Texas; May of 1953. On October 21, 1953, Roy was drafted into the Army and was stationed in El Paso, Texas and later Columbus, Georgia. Shortly after Roy was stationed in El Paso, Peggy moved to be close to him and lived with a family working as a nanny. Peggy said Roy would sometimes sneak off base to stay with her. Thankfully, he never got caught! Peggy says these were the best of times. Roy was also a good manager of money. He would give cash loans to servicemen who ran short due to them drinking their paycheck away. He said he was always repaid with interest. 😊
After being discharged from the army, they moved to Blue Mound. Roy worked as an assembly line worker at the General Motors plant. Later, moved to Arlington, Texas where he worked as an accountant for Central Airlines, and lastly, he was hired as a ranch manager for the Double T Ranch in Roanoke, Texas. His dream job for 30+ years. Roy loved managing the 1,000-acre ranch. Due to an unfortunate ranch accident, Roy retired in 1996 and moved to Keller Texas where he and Peggy have lived for 29 years. Roy couldn’t sit idle very long and decided to purchase 60 acres in Paradise, Texas where he and Peggy spent many weekends enjoying time with family, fishing, feeding the wildlife and cutting trails through the woods so the grandkids could ride motorcycles and ATVs.
Roy is survived by his wife of 72 years; Peggy Mills, children; Pam Glover & Randy, Tina Mills and son Greg Mills & Michelle, grandchildren; Erin Thompson & Chris, Logan Glover & Ricki, Megan Glover, Madison Glover, Shane Cloud & Georgeanna, Angela Ernst, Mindy Ernst & Danny, Trevor Ernst & Ashlyn, Hunter Ernst, Stephanie Sandretto & David, Amanda Donnelly & Cody, Bonnie Flanders & David, Andrea Mills, Maggie Bloom & Jake, Jake Maxcy & Charly, great grandchildren; Ellie Thompson, Charlie Thompson, Remi Glover, Rory Glover, Rosie Glover, Ruby Glover, Ema Bass, Tyler Bass, Peyton Bass, Zoe Abundis, Zoraya Abundis, Alexa Sandretto, Kaitlyn Sandretto, Jarah Sandretto, Rylee Donnelly, Gwendolyn Flanders, Charlotte Flanders, William Flanders, Ellaviere Flanders, Owen Bloom and Ben Bloom.
