Susan Elizabeth Rau, a beloved wife, stepmother, grandmother, and esteemed finance executive, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2024, at 75, surrounded by her loving family. Born November 15, 1945, in Orange, NJ, Susan lived a life of dedication, compassion, and service.
Susan's journey in the finance industry began shortly after Susan received a BA degree from Loyola University and an MBA from DePaul University. Her sharp intellect, tenacity, and unwavering work ethic quickly distinguished her in a competitive field and led the field as one of the only executive women in the finance industry. She finished her career by launching and running a successful consulting agency for over 25 years.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Susan was deeply committed to empowering and advancing women’s rights. She served on the boards of several national and local non-profits. She was particularly passionate about empowering women to reach their fullest potential and to hold leadership positions across industry and politics.
Susan met Richard Freitag in 1990 and they married in 1999. Together, they traveled the world and fed Susan’s never-ending curiosity. As a stepmother and wife, Susan quickly became a cornerstone of the family. In her later years, Susan found immense joy in her role as a grandmother to nine wonderful grandchildren.
Susan’s legacy is one of kindness, resilience, and an unyielding commitment to improving the world. She will be remembered for her generous spirit, exceptional professional achievements, and profound impact on all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Freitag; her stepdaughters, Kim (James) Stitzel and Alissa (Dave) Lavender; her grandchildren, Tyler, Mackenzie, Olivia, Ryleigh, Delaney, Jack, Jameson, Drew and Maiya. Susan was the Godmother to Patricia Kolber’s first son David and a beloved Aunt and friend to her daughters Susan and Laura. She also leaves behind so many friends who will miss her dearly.
A visitation and celebration of Susan’s life will be held on June 7, 2024, at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 5725 Colleyville Blvd., Colleyville, Texas. Visitation will be held inside the funeral home at 11 a.m. and followed by a 12 p.m. graveside service in the park.
