Susan was born June 1, 1943, in Alexandria, Louisiana to Annie Lynne Routt and Lt. Virgil R. Bell of Fort Worth. Susan was the eldest of four children who grew up as "Army brats" because of their father's U.S. Army career. This meant many moves and different schools she attended. Susan suffered greatly from muscle and skeletal health problems the last few years of her life, being cared for primarily by her husband. She endured many trips to doctors, hospitals and rehabilitation facilities.
