He was born to P. K. Mathai and Aleyamma Mathai on January 28, 1940, in Konni, Kerala, and was one of eight children. After having worked for The Times of India in Mumbai, he later moved to Saudi Arabia to work for Saudi Aramco, where he met his wife, Molly. They got married on September 26, 1976, and continued to reside in Saudi Arabia until his early retirement in 1993.
After his retirement, the family settled in Kalathipady, Kottayam, and became members of Mar Elijah Cathedral. He had a deep passion for serving the church and held various positions not only in his home parish and diocese but in several other spiritual organizations, including the YMCA, Mar Gregorios prayer group, and the Bible Society, Kottayam. In 2019, both Thomas and Molly moved to the United States to live with their children and grandchildren in Bedford, TX.
Thomas Mathai was a man of discipline, an avid reader, and liked to keep himself well-informed on current affairs and a wide spectrum of interests. He was never satisfied with sitting still and loved to spend his time on charity work, gardening, and occasional travel.
He was a deeply beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. He had a cheerful personality and loved to socialize and spend time with people, often sharing his personal life experiences.
His passing was sudden and unexpected, but quick. His final moments were at home, surrounded by family, just like he had always hoped it would be. He is survived by his wife Molly, their children Binoy Thomas and wife Rebecca Thomas, Bijoy Thomas and wife Lijy Thomas, and grandchildren Abigail Thomas, Leah Thomas, and Benjamin Thomas.
