I know it was just the 2 year anniversary of Tim’s passing but it has been very heavy on my heart because I didn’t know when or how it happened as I was not with HL after December 2021. My deepest condolences to all of his family.

I worked with Tim for many years at Houlihan Lokey in the Industrials Group. Although, I was the project administrator in Chicago, I worked with Tim often on deals and events and provided backup to his assistant when she was out.

I had so much respect for Tim as he was a man who shared similar values of faith and family and when I’d see him at work events, he was always the most respectful and professional gentleman. Although we sat on many Zooms during the pandemic, I loved seeing him at our last in-person event in Austin. Driving his truck and being in Texas definitely suited him.

I am so sad that he was taken from his family too soon. It was hard to grasp when I heard, as he was always the image of strength and health consciousness.

RIP, Tim. And I’ll be looking for you to get the best wine recommendation when we meet again at our Father’s house.

You were always so kind to me, even in our few interactions. I remember that you loved to play the drums and that your car was just like Speed Racer's. Sending you and your family love, R.I.P.

My name is Justin Spewock and I was a fraternity brother of Timmy’s.  I wrestled for the university and was eating in west quad when I first met Tim - and my initial thought was he was a football player I had not had the chance to meet yet.  Come to find out he had just pledged SAE and wasn’t playing sport at all although he had the stats and physique to rival anyone on Michigans team.   I remember  him sharing about his life at 98 lbs and playing drums before the gigantic growth spurt that put him in D1 physical capability range.  Surprisingly sports wasn’t his thing but the sport of business was.

The memories are too numerous to mention - and my admiration for this highly intelligent, gifted, funny, yet insanely humble guy has never stopped growing.  His analytic gift and work ethic in academics and business, his sense of humor and wit were unmatched.

God bless you Tim - will see you on the other side at some point.

Tim was a person I met through a business association where he helped sell our business

From the moment I spoke to him for the first time, I could tele was genuine, authentic and a straight shooter 

He spearheaded the sale of our company along with his amazing team and I am forever grateful and indebted to him for his efforts and hard work in getting this done 

I am genuinely saddened by his loss as I got to know him as a person beyond the business relationship.  His demeanor, love for his wife and kids ( which we chatted about ) and love for what he did in his life represented the feelings of a guy who truly appreciated his blessings 

When I heard about his passing, I truly felt sadness and a sense of how and why would this happen to a guy like Tim - with such a bright future ahead of him 

My prayers as wells those of my family are with him during this very difficult time and I am left speechless except to offer my condolences and prayers 

Tim was a wonderful colleague, partner and friend.  He had many wonderful qualities that are highlighted in a text to me from a CEO who was on the other side of a transaction from Tim.  The CEO texted:

"He was such an upbeat, positive-perspective guy whom I held in such high regard."

Tim was all of that and so much more.   Tim was a very accomplished and successful banker, well-liked by all, and a terrific father and husband.    We all miss him greatly.  






I had the good fortune to know Tim as a close friend back in high school at Brother Rice and later in life as a colleague at Lehman Brothers, and he was truly one of a kind in all the best ways. He brought a unique passion to every aspect of life, with a great sense of humor and an upbeat positive attitude that made him a great friend, a highly successful investment banker, and always just a ton of fun to be around. His wide-ranging hobbies and independent thinking were always interesting and entertaining, and as our tastes evolved from a Stroh’s beer at the Mt. Chalet in Detroit to dinner and a good wine on Park Avenue in NYC he was always the same great guy. We lost a great man way too early and I extend my deepest sympathies to the entire Steffen family.

I knew Tim back in high school.  He was an impressive individual even then.  Funny, smart, athletic, musically gifted, story-teller.  Life was more fun when Tim was in the mix.   My deepest condolences to the family.   My heart breaks for those closest to him.  Keeping Tim and all those grieving in my prayers, for the grace to carry on and faith and hope of being together with him one day again.  Eternal rest in the loving arms of Jesus, my friend.

Some people, sadly, seem to struggle to fully fill a life.  Tim seemed to fill several -- he was larger than life, with a quick wit, even quicker smile, and a genuine enthusiasm for experiencing as much of life as he could.  We were colleagues for several years, during which time my trips down the hallway to visit his office could always be counted on to brighten my day.  He was an immensely talented professional, but it was always his family that meant the most to Tim, and for whom he did all that he did.  He was a living lesson to us all in how to prioritize the things that were really important, and how to be an extremely serious person without ever taking oneself too seriously.  The world is much the poorer for his loss, much the richer for his example. 

Tim was a kind, compassionate and caring person... not normal for an Investment Banker.  I had the pleasure of working with him on several deals and he was  a pro.  I have fond memories of some of the best food and wine dinners with him and his Team and driving Porsches in Atlanta.  He will surely be missed. 

The brighter the star, the darker the sky when it’s gone.  We remember Tim as a fun-loving, charming, imaginative, talented character!   We even loved his imaginary friend who skied behind his grandfather’s boat.  He was  a talented musician who made the Brother Rice halftime show a treat.  God blessed us for a short time, Tim left us with a million memories and a great example of how to live and love.  You’re in good company now, Tim.  Pray we will see you again.  God bless you & help your family through this separation.

Kind but always self-assured, gregarious but collected, scholarly but practical: Tim was all of these things and much, much more. A presence whenever he walked in the room, you immediately sensed Tim had arrived - soon too be followed by a bone-crushing handshake, a big hug and that even bigger smile. His wit, charisma and joie de vivre was something many, including myself, admired deeply and took away, quietly hoping to incorporate those qualities Tim exuded into our own lives.

My fondest memories of Tim are our many verandah chats opining about music and cars, watches and wine, politics and finance. But, most of all remembering those handful of Thanksgivings spent together where Tim’s love and pride for his family was so clear and so abundant: Laura, Reagan, TC, Christopher, Mary Sue and the entire Steffen clan. Thank you Tim for all that you did, all that you taught and all that you were.


Tim was my brother Jeff’s best friend and probably the coolest person I’ve known in my life. I had a crush on him in high school (when he was about 25 - sorry Laura, the truth had to come out sometime.) I’ll never forget him and Jeff coming to visit me in college for Halloween, having stopped off at K-Mart on the way to pick up size 28 dresses and wigs for costumes (they were the ugliest “women” ever but Jeff still looked better than normal.) I only saw Tim a few times since then, but Jeff never stopped bragging about all of his accomplishments and sharing pictures and videos of him and his family. The world has suffered a huge loss. Lord, let perpetual light shine upon him and may he and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. 

Tim was one of the most genuine people I knew.  Awesome attitude, awesome outlook on life. I still think about Jeff and Tim’s graduation from U of M when we were hanging out at Arch Street with all the families and I was arguing with him about how I was sure I heard him say the night before that he bought a new motorcycle.  May God continue to watch over you and your family, Tim. 

Tim was one of a kind, with a passion for life.  He lived with a genuine authenticity and unmistakable energy.  Tim was a great partner and friend.   Well respected by colleagues and clients.  I will always admire how deeply he loved and prioritized his family.  Laura, Reagan and TC, you meant everything to him.  A toast of fine wine to you, Tim.  You will be missed. 



We met Tim and Laura about a year ago at Keystone Church. I truly enjoyed seeing them both on Saturday evenings. 

The last conversation I had with Tim was on Father’s Day at Keystone Church. We were talking about his cowboy hat and teasing him that he had crossed over and is “now” a true Texan! He told us the story about his other hat getting run over in the street but this one worked just fine. He was a good man and will be missed! 

Tim was a completely original human being with a huge smile and a generous soul. He could fill a room with his laughter and stories. He had a banker's gravitas with an artist's eye for beauty in life. He was an athlete & musician, joker & storyteller, rugby player & black belt, giver & collector. He was intelligent & disciplined, reliable & ridiculous, teacher & coach, cook & oenophile. He was a devoted brother, uncle, friend, husband, father and son. He will always be an inspiration to me for generosity, hard work, and joie de vie. Tim - keep an eye on us down here, until meet again in heaven.
