Abbie Jean Young Thompson
October 24, 1921 – May 13, 2019
In loving and appreciative memory of our mother.
Abbie Jean Young Thompson joined her husband Woodrow Cuff Thompson in heaven on May 13, 2019. She spent the last several weeks of her life at the Reynolds Hospice House surrounded by her family. She was the mother of three children: Donna Kramer, of Salt Lake City Utah, Woody Thompson of Seattle, Washington and Steve Thompson, of Collierville, Tennessee.
She was born in Lepanto, Arkansas in 1921, the second of nine children. She has two brothers who will miss her, Archie Young, of Madison, Alabama and Bruce Young, of Georgetown, Mississippi. Her six other siblings who have passed away are: Shelby Young, Naomi Young, Leonard Young, Mae Ruth Scott, Joanne Dickerson, and Betty Owens.
Jean's life was full of adventure and service to others. She was a kind and hardworking woman who inspired others thru her efforts and was always willing to help others. Upon the passing of her husband she enrolled herself in the University of Memphis at the age of 40. She graduated and later earned a masters degree while raising three children.
She was a Memphis high school teacher at four different schools: Humes, East, Wooddale and White Station. She was a faithful member of Eudora Baptist Church and was a Sunday school teacher. When she retired from teaching she volunteered every week at the Memphis literacy council where she helped adults improve their reading skills. She also taught students at her home every week - English as a second language.
Jean loved to travel. She was a member of the Friendship Force International and stayed with a member family in foreign countries on many of her trips. Those times were always special to her. She was an ambassador to those countries and those families saw the best our United States has to offer. She was to humble to think she was special but she was. She also visited every continent expect Antarctica. She cruised the Caribbean and did an Alaskan cruise with her family. One Thanksgiving was spent on a family vacation in Disney World. She left all of us with a lot of wonderful memories. We will miss her.
