Anne Northcross Price, 94, passed away in Atlanta on June 24 and will be buried in Collierville, Tennessee following a graveside service. She leaves three children, eight grandchildren and innumerable observations and opinions, few of which were left unexpressed.
Born and raised in Collierville during the Great Depression, she left for Washington, D.C. following a dogged pursuit by the love of her life, Jim Price, and ultimately settled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They spent 50 years together and only in books and movies have two people been so perfectly matched.
Anne delighted in conversation and had the unnerving ability to glean one’s life story from a single encounter. With age, she acceded to that state of grace that is every Southern woman’s birthright, engaging anyone who interested her about whatever subject struck her fancy. It is a mark of her cheerful, open nature that these encounters were almost always met with a smile and thoughtful response. In addition, she was an impossibly gifted gardener, a compulsive (if meandering) storyteller and an enthusiastic supporter of Alabama football.
Her greatest gift, and it was staggering to all who experienced it, was her ability to love. To be loved by Anne Price was to be cloaked in unconditional acceptance and devotion. She loved better, stronger and more fiercely than seemed possible. Oblivious to any flaws in those who fell under her protection, all transgressions up to and including homicide were breezily dismissed as something the scoundrel surely had coming. (Happily, homicide was never put to the test.)
She left no work undone and savored a life exceedingly well-lived. A good man who adored her. Children and grandchildren for whom she was Home. An ability to face good days with appreciation and bad ones with unblinking determination.
Anne was a lifelong Democrat who rejoiced in achieving her oft-stated goal of living to see the results of the 2020 election. Should you wish to honor her, consider contributing to the Stacey Abrams for Governor (GA) campaign or the progressive cause of your choice (and then vote). If that doesn’t suit, she faithfully supported her local food bank and would encourage you to do so as well.
