

Dr. Donald Thomas "Don" Tubbs, 85, died Friday, January 15, 2016. He was born September 10, 1930 in Nashville, TN where he graduated from Central High School. He attended Memphis State University on a football scholarship where he received his Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate degrees. He worked for Memphis City Schools where he was a teacher and coach before becoming Director of Instruction. While there, he directed school to school projects abroad. He retired from Memphis City Schools in 1977 to become Assistant Superintendent, Instructional Services with Huntsville, AL City Schools until retiring in 1995. He served as Adjunct Professor at several universities and authored and co-authored many books throughout his career. Additionally, Dr. Tubbs was a highly requested keynote speaker and travelled throughout the US and internationally sharing his passion for teaching, leadership values, and maintaining positive attitudes. He had a gift for making people laugh through his keen sense of humor and funny stories.Dr. Tubbs was a Veteran and served in the Armed Forces Special Services Division in Korea. He was a member of New Salem Baptist Church, Huntsville, as well as The M Club, Phi Delta Kappa, American Association of International Education, and other national and state organizations.Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, June Hamlin Tubbs, of Memphis, and children Dr. Rodney Tubbs (Denise), Melinda Pittman (Jerry), Tommy Tubbs (Heather), Dona Apple (Larry), 5 grandchildren Hunter Tubbs (Mary Anne), Haley Andrews (Walter), Taylor Cone (Jeremy), Tiffany Tubbs, Tucker Tubbs, and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Joe Leo and Mattie Lou Tubbs, and brother, Granville.Visitation is Monday, January 18, 1-2 pm, Collierville Funeral Home, with memorial service following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to New Salem Baptist Church or The Alzheimer's Association.
