Douglas was born to Clarence E. and Alyce J. Conger on March 19, 1933 on his family’s farm in Riceville, Iowa.
Upon graduation from Iowa State University and marriage to Donna Lee Mark, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force. During his 25 years of service as a navigator, he was awarded among many other awards, the Distinguished Flying Cross.
After his Air Force career, he taught Junior ROTC at Westwood High School in Mesa, Arizona. In retirement he enjoyed playing bridge, going fishing on his pontoon boat, taking international tours, and traveling the United States in his 5th wheel RV, with Donna, his wife of 62 years.
Douglas is survived by his children, Mark (Linda) and Karen (Rob) Monks, grandchildren Jacob (Rebecca), Kyle (Catherine), Ryan (Mariola) Heintz, Andrew Heintz, Blake Higgins, and Logan Monks. He is also survived by his sister, Sharon Walker and sister-in-laws Betty Conger and Margaret Ann Fox, and by seven great-grandchildren, Caleb and Zora Conger, Wallace, Finley, Maeve and Madeleine Conger, and Catalina Heintz.
Douglas was predeceased by his wife Donna, his daughter Terri Heintz, his granddaughter Alexis Heintz, his siblings, Pauline Moore, Kate Moss, Richard, and Dean, and his parents, Clarence and Alyce.
Douglas had a very out-going personality. He dearly loved his wife and family and will be missed by all those that knew and loved him.
A memorial service and inurnment will be held at a future date this summer at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville, Iowa.
