Born on April 13, 1937, to the late Francis M. Hoff and Dorothy H. Hoff, Gary was the oldest of the “Hoff bunch.” He grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he attended Union High School, serving as class president. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force stationed in locations such as Tampa, Fl, Morocco, and Columbus, MS. It was at Columbus Air Force base that he met Martha Carol, the love of his life. They married in June 1961 and were blessed with two children, Jeffrey M. Hoff and Jennifer L. Hoff. In 1980, they relocated to Germantown, TN, when he accepted a position with Schering-Plough.
Gary was a natural southpaw with a passion for boxing, golf, and especially baseball, always cheering for his Detroit Tigers. After earning a BBA in Accounting from Western Michigan University, he returned to USAF as an officer. He also earned his Master’s degree from the University of Southern California. Over his 22-year career in the Air Force, he rose to the rank of Major, serving as the Chief of Logistics and Training Support before his retirement.
A lover of music, Gary was a lifetime member of the Memphis Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society and Memphis Men of Harmony, where he enjoyed singing and fellowship. He was also a dedicated member of Riveroaks Reformed Presbyterian Church and held a deep bond with his church community.
Gary will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Known for his humor, kindness, and gratitude, he cherished his family and loved to text everyone to share stories and advice. His wisdom and warmth touched all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Martha Carol Hoff; his children Jeffery M. Hoff and Jennifer L. Hoff; and two grandsons, J. Harrison Hoff and Henry W. Hoff, along with their mother, Shannon Hoff. He is also survived by his devoted caregivers, Charlyn and Dee, who cared for him until his final day. Gary was preceded in death by both of his parents, his sisters, Judy Haner, Janet Kalilikane, and Susan Hoff, and his brother, James Hoff.
A special thanks to Hope Hospice for their compassion and kindness during this difficult time.
