George Gibbs Baxter went to be with our Lord Jesus May 9th, 2025 after a lingering illness. He was born June 20th, 1946 in Helena Arkansas but grew up in Dalton, Georgia. From a very young age, he had a love of sports, playing and excelling in many of them at Dalton High School.
He met his wife, Laurie Scott, at the University of Georgia. They were married in 1968, and both graduated from Georgia in 1969. They were blessed with 3 children: Scott Henley Baxter, Laurie Layne (Wilson) and Molly Anne (Sentak); and 5 grandchildren: Scott Jr., Allie, and Gracie Baxter and Catie and Becca Sentak. George is preceded in death by his Mother, Harriet Henley Baxter and his Father, Guy Baxter.
George had a successful 33 year career as a sales representative with the Arrow Shirt Company, but the work he loved most came after retirement: 20 years as business manager for Brinkley Heights Ministries. He was a faithful member at Germantown Baptist Church for 47 years and served in many capacities, from teacher to usher. George loved his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and his church. He loved to travel and play tennis, but most of all he loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He’ll be remembered for his funny stories and quick wit, but especially for his devotion to Jesus and his family. His family and friends will greatly miss him but rejoice that he’s at home with Jesus.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 15, 2025, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Germantown Baptist Church, located at 9450 Poplar Avenue, Germantown, Tennessee 38139. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with a reception immediately afterward at the church.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of George may be offered to Germantown Baptist Church or Brinkley Heights Ministries.
