George Woodward Flowers, 85, passed away peacefully at the Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville, TN on Sunday, April 24, 2022. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Patsy Hamner Flowers. George was born in Newbern, TN to George Douglas and Lula Mai Flowers. He served his city for 30 years as a Memphis City Policeman most notably as Officer Friendly. He served his country retiring from the Tennessee national guard after more than 30 years. He faithfully served his church, Fisherville Baptist, for more than 50 years as a deacon, the building and grounds chair, a Sunday school teacher, and many other activities. George loved organizing the Memorial Day service each year honoring the veterans buried in the church cemetery. He served his community as an active member of the Fisherville Civic Club. Additionally, George help run Friendly Frank’s Flea Market first with his friend Frank and then his daughter, Peggy. He loved working in his extensive shop making beautiful wood treasures for his friends and family. He never said no to a project especially at the request of his grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Sue McFarland and his son in law, Scott Eagen. He is survived by his sons, Steve (Nancy) Halyard , of Collierville, George Douglas (Anna) Flowers, of Crete, and his daughter, Lyn Halyard Eagen of Knoxville. Pop also leaves 7 beloved grandchildren: Joey ( Lauren) Halyard, of Birmingham, AL, LTC Andrew (Taylor) Eagen, of Muenster, Germany, Natalia (Justin) Moose, of London, UK, Thomas Eagen of Knoxville, Reece (Jessica) Halyard, Collierville, Paloma (Will) Stansell, Atlanta, GA and Stevie (Uday) Halyard Cherukuri, of Collierville. 11 great grandchildren: Jared, Abby, Bella, Presley and Addison Halyard, Shayan and Saanvi Halyard Cherukuri, August Moose, Jackson, Sander and Hank Eagen and 2 more on the way. In addition to his immediate family, he leaves his cherished nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 1, 4-6 pm at Collierville Funeral Home, Collierville TN.
Visitation on Monday, May 2, 1:00 pm will be held at First Baptist Church Fisherville followed at 2 pm by the funeral and graveside services.
