John was the beloved husband of Ursula Bird (née Schwilk) and the devoted father of Catherine, John Jr. (deceased), and Robert (Bobby).
He was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, on March 3, 1935, the fifth child of Burton Bird and Mary Bird (née Finian). John grew up in both Connecticut and Florida. In 1955, he joined the United States Army, where he served for 30 years as a Logistics and Supply specialist. His distinguished military career took him to many places across the United States and around the world, including Germany, Korea, and Vietnam, where he served two tours.
Rising through the ranks, John retired on February 1, 1983, from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. Throughout his career, he taught Logistics and Supply on numerous occasions, and the skills he gained carried over into his civilian life after retirement.
John was proud to serve his country and was the recipient of many honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
While stationed in Germany, John met his future wife, Ursula Schwilk. They married on May 6, 1958, and shared 67 wonderful years together. They were blessed with three children: Catherine, John Jr., and Robert (Bobby). John was a loving father who actively participated in family life, including Scouts, sports, and karate. He was a devoted husband, father, and role model.
In retirement, John pursued his passion for model railroading, working in HO scale and creating intricate layouts inspired by German countryside and town life. He loved building scenes, wiring, and running trains. He also enjoyed reading and writing stories. A man of strong faith, John was an active member of the Knights of Columbus at Church of the Incarnation.
John’s legacy is one of service, love, and devotion to both his family and his country. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
John leaves behind his daughter, Catherine (John) Branly, son Bobby (Debi) Bird, 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and his brothers Paul Bird and Kevin (Irene) Bird. He is preceded in death by his wife Ursula and his son John Jr.
