John Baxter Greene, a longtime Collierville resident, passed from this life on Sunday, October 13 at the age of 96. He was born in Obion County to Mary and Albert Greene on January 13, 1923. John graduated from Abilene Christian College in 1948, and in the same year, he married the love of his life, Jackie Buster. They were devoted to each other, loved sharing life together, and celebrated their 71st anniversary this past August.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie, and by his three sons, Ted (Judie), Dave (Karen), and Thom. He will be missed by his five grandchildren: Austin Greene (Rachelle), Kelsey Kirk (Alex), Marshall Greene (Jessica), Susan Rice (Mark), and Claire Greene. He is also survived by his 4 great-grandchildren: Jenna and Tori Kirk, Peyton Howell, and Wynn Rice. John was “Pappy” to all of his grandchildren, and they made many sweet memories with Pappy working around the house, riding the tractor, and going on trips together.
John served in the United States Army as a Combat Medic in World War II. He served overseas in the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the 330th Infantry.
John retired after 30 years from the United States Postal Service. He was a dedicated employee, strong family man, and devoted to God in the way he lived. John served in his church as an elder for many years, loved woodworking, and enjoyed building furniture for his children. He had a special love for Louis L’Amour books and read them constantly! He and Jackie worked alongside of each other with joy as they raised their family and shared their faith by loving others with their kindnesses, hospitality, and generosity. He lived his life well, and fiercely loved his family. We will miss him, and rejoice that we enjoyed so much time with him. John leaves a legacy of loving God with all of his strength and loving others as God loves him.
