Born in Washington, D.C., to Helene Genevieve Thrift and John Edward McManus, he was also raised in part by Charlie E. Hall. His upbringing was shaped by his family's military ties, including time spent in Germany, where he graduated from Kaiserslautern American High School.
He later served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Captain. His military honors included the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, Campaign Service Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal.
He attended the University of Southern Mississippi, where he played baseball, was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, and earned a degree in Marketing and Business Administration. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Memphis School of Law in 1972 and enjoyed a long and dedicated career practicing law, continuing his work until shortly before his passing.
Beyond his legal career, John was deeply committed to the Mid-South Transplant Foundation. He joined its Governing Board in January 2006 and served as Chairman from January 2012 through June 2026, also contributing to its Finance and Executive Committees.
An avid golfer, John maintained longstanding ties to Colonial Country Club and was a member of Wyndyke Country Club. He was also a devoted supporter of the University of Memphis Tigers.
He is survived by his wife, Gaye McManus; son, John E. McManus (Lori); daughters, Jessica McManus (Jason Ferreira) and Jamie Conn (J.D. Conn); and five grandchildren, Taylor McManus, Jackson, Jace, Jamison, and Jenna Grace Conn.
In an essay he once wrote, “Thus far my life has been a happy one. I only hope, with God’s grace, the remainder will be just as happy.”
Looking back on a life filled with accomplishments, service, and love, we would like to believe that the remainder was just that—just as happy.
