

Omer George Mongeon, 87, of Batesville, MS, formerly of Collierville, died Friday, July 23, 2010 at the Mississippi State Veterans Home. Visitation will take place Wednesday, July 28, 2010 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and the funeral service will be held July 29, 2010 at 10:00 am. Both will take place at Collierville Funeral Home, 534 W. Poplar Ave., Collierville, TN. Burial will be at Magnolia Cemetery in Collierville. He is survived by his second wife, Eloise Rollins Mongeon; his three sons, Kenneth Mongeon of Tucson, AZ, Army Major General (retired) Daniel Mongeon of Alexandria, VA, Terry Mongeon of Algonquin, IL; and his daughter Debra Thibeault of Collierville, TN; brothers Roland Mongeon of Lee’s Summit, MO, Emil Mongeon of Brentwood, TN; sisters Eva (Pat) LaHair of Millbury, Mass, Irene Donnelly of Millbury, MA, and Jeannette Linder of Millbury, MA. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Mongeon, son of Frederic and Leona Mongeon, was born in Fall River, MA and grew up in Fall River and Manchaug, MA. He served for over 30 years in the United States Air Force enlisting in the Army Air Corp in 1943 and retiring in August, 1975 as a Senior Master Sergeant. During WWII he was stationed in England and participated in thirty-four air combat bombing missions in B17s and B24s as a flight engineer and waist gunner. He participated in two combat missions on D-Day targeting bridges in the vicinity of St. Lo, France. In October, 1944 during his 34th bombing mission he was shot down over Merseburg, Germany and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner. His military declarations include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. He loved to travel and enjoyed living overseas and experiencing difficult cultures. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and loved playing cards.
