Richard Lawrence Lyman

Born on November 17, 1945, in San Angelo, TX, Richard lived a life defined by service, adventure, friendship, and a deep appreciation for the people he loved. A gifted aviator, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 27 years, retiring with the rank of Captain after a distinguished career marked by exceptional leadership, patriotism and dedication to duty. Richard earned numerous military decorations, including the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, and two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals. Following his retirement from the Navy, Richard continued his passion for aviation as a pilot for FedEx⁠, where he enjoyed a successful second career in the skies.

Richard was a longtime attendee of Unity Church of Practical Christianity, where he embraced a faith centered on love, acceptance, gratitude, and spiritual growth. His faith was reflected in the way he cared for others, welcomed people into his life, and valued relationships above all else.

His commitment to service extended beyond the military and his church. Richard was also a proud member of the Priory of St. Clair, a regional chapter of the Modern Knights Templar, an organization dedicated to Christian fellowship, charity, and servant leadership. He believed that true leadership was demonstrated through integrity, faith, and caring for others.

Richard never met a stranger. He was known for his larger-than-life stories, strong opinions, quick wit, and generous heart. Those who knew him understood that while he always had advice to offer and a story to tell, everything came from a place of love.

Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 15 years, Susan Lyman, sons, Jay Hamblin and his wife, Lisa, and John Hamblin, along with John’s son, Kayden, who lovingly knew him as Grandpa Richard.

He is also survived by his former wife, Gayle of San Diego, CA, with whom he remained connected through family, Gayle’s daughter, Denise, and Denise’s children, Caitlin, Cameron and Camille, all of whom also lovingly knew him as Grandpa Richard.

Richard is further survived by his sister, Phyllis Lyman of New York, NY, as well as many extended family members, dear friends, neighbors, and former shipmates whose lives were enriched by his friendship and guidance.

He was preceded in death by his parents Anna Fern and Richard Lyman.

Richard’s family will remember him as a man who valued loyalty, relationships, and beautiful views. Whether from the cockpit of an aircraft, a balcony overlooking the water, or around a table sharing stories, he believed life’s greatest treasures were the people we share it with. He spent his life building relationships that will continue to impact those he leaves behind.

A memorial service will be held at 11am. Friday, July 10th at the Collierville Funeral Home located at 3863 Bailey Station Rd in Collierville, TN. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Following will be military honors and interment at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 4000 Forest Hill Irene Rd., Memphis, TN 38125.
