John Matthew Patrick Finnegan passed away suddenly on July 20, 2020.

He was 66 years old. He is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa Finnegan (nee Moos); his daughters: Teresa (Noah) and Megan (Eric); his siblings: Paul (Maureen), Mary (Keith), and Patricia (Frank); his sister-in-law, Jean (Al); half of the “Cousins Finnegan” (Frank); his co-star from the movie Invincible, Mark Wahlberg; and his cat, Lilly. John also leaves behind his nieces, nephews, and countless friends. John was born in Philadelphia on September 21, 1953. He grew up in Collingswood and graduated from Paul VI High School in 1971. He played basketball at Rutgers-Camden before graduating with his bachelor’s degree from Glassboro State College. He worked as a letter carrier for the USPS for 34 years and was a faithful union member. He retired in 2018.

John and Teresa met at Kaminski’s. They were married on October 27, 1979 at St. John’s Church in Collingswood and they raised their family in Cherry Hill. John loved Philadelphia sports and witnessed two Phillies’ World Series victories, two 76ers’ Championships, and three triumphant Super Bowls (as he liked to say, the first two were when his daughters were born). In retirement, he was a fixture on LBI and at local high school girls’ and boys’ basketball games. John was selfless and treated everyone he met with kindness and respect. He loved his life and all the family and friends that filled it. He joins his mother, father, brother Patrick, and daughter Patricia in heaven to cheer for his two favorite teams: the Eagles and whoever’s playing Dallas.

A Memorial Visitation will take place Thursday, July 30, 2020, 8:30-10:30am at BLAKE-DOYLE Funeral Home, 226 W. Collings Ave, Collingswood, NJ. John always had a way of making you feel that he was your closest and most sympathetic friend. When I started at the Postal Service he always provided warm words of encouragement during what for me was a rough time. He was a warm, positive person who will be, and deserves to be greatly missed

John was truly one of the nicest and most genuine people that I have ever met. The one passion we both shared was sports. Coming back to visit my family in LBI each summer - I looked forward to the conversations we would have around the neighborhood. John always joked that someday my Titans would face his Eagles in the Super Bowl. I still look forward to that day! My thoughts & prayers go out to the Finnegan family. John will be very much missed.

I met Finster aka. (John Finnegan) at work. We both carried Mail in the same area and instantly became friends when he discovered how much I liked Mark Wahlberg and the Eagles. I felt he needed an agent for his acting career and was hired on the spot. We were always searching for that big part... We were also partners in the Kentucky Derby every year. Of course our horses always seemed to come in last place. Man how we joked about that... "Damn You Finnegan" you left us way to soon. I will miss everything about you!!! Finster was the funniest and kindest person that I ever had the pleasure of knowing. God bless his wife Terry and his girls always. I know his spirit will be with many of us Forever !!! "FLY EAGLE FLY " !!!!

Our family first got to know John and the Finnegans through Cherry Hill youth basketball. That set the foundation for a friendship that has lasted and grown through the years. We have shared many good times. John was a truly unique man that we all admired for his outgoing manner, ever present humor, and love of all things Philly sports related. The text messages with videos received from John quizzing us on the hidden gems in his jersey collection were priceless. We are deeply saddened at the void created with John’s untimely passing. Our thoughts are with Terry, Theresa and Megan. Hopefully our grief will be tempered with time and will be replaced with fond memories of the times we spent with this truly remarkable man. We are better people for having had the opportunity to know him.

Thoughts and prayers to Terry and the family. John will be tremendously missed. I’m going to miss our conversations from across the street, the waves to and from the beach, his laugh every time he got my twin boys mixed up, the updates on his sign, but mostly, I’m just going to miss him. John Finnegan. The nicest person I’ve ever met in my life.

Cheryl and I offer our heartfelt sympathy to Terry, their daughters, and their entire family.
John was a fellow Union Rep/Officer and it was an honor serving with him in that capacity and on the work floor as a fellow Letter Carrier.
When I deployed to Iraq with the Marines it was a tough Christmas but at Christmastime I received a package from John that he had mailed. It contained an Eagles jersey and knowing John to be an avid Eagles fan, it really lifted me. We Letter Carriers are busy at that time of year and he took the time to mail off a package while probably working OT most days. Upon returning home from deployment we met up at a Union meeting and he excitedly asked if I liked the jersey and I busted him on sending me a shirt of a player who had been traded two years prior. He laughed and explained that he gets that stuff at Goodwill where the selection is limited. We laughed.
I will miss him but will never forget him and his thoughtfulness, a true gem. I'll always cherish the shirt too.
