Nicholas Longo, 89, passed away peacefully at home on April 10,2021 with his loving family present. He was born and raised in South Philadelphia, lived in Glassboro, Berlin, Voorhees, and Marlton before moving to Riverton several years ago. While growing up in South Philadelphia, he spent many of his Saturdays with his little sister Rita at the movie theater watching what we now term “the old movies”. He was very athletic, playing on his high school and military basketball and baseball teams. Anyone who witnessed him yelling at a game on TV could validate that he was also the ultimate Philly sports fan. Nick was loud and large, both physically and aesthetically. He possessed a charisma that drew people toward him. He worked extremely hard, and he celebrated even harder, always the life of the party.
Nick eventually won over the first love of his life, Mary Lou, who initially dismissed him as “a showoff”. Shortly after getting married, Nick was drafted into the Army and served during the Korean War. After serving he and his wife settled in Glassboro and had three sons. When his wife suddenly passed, Nick took to the road to support his children. He began his early career as a national salesman for the Corday Lighting Company. Eager to unite his family he met and married his second love Geraldine. He welcomed and loved her three daughters, and they added a son of their own. At this time, he established and operated The Family House of Lamps in Berlin, NJ for many years until his retirement. Throughout his life, his focus was on family. Not simply in the sense of blood relations, but in the grander vision that one’s family are all those people that a person chooses to love during a long and well lived lifetime. Whether you called him Nick, Nicky, Pop or Uncle Nick he was loved by all.
Nick is predeceased by his first wife Mary Lou (Grossi), brothers Charlie Longo, Salvatore Longo, and Frank Longo. His sisters Carmella Levato, Jenny Longo, and Rita Scarpato. He is survived by his wife Geraldine (Errichetti). Beloved father of Frank Longo, Nicholas Longo, Jr., John Longo, and his wife Valerie (DiPietro), Andrea Longo Macchiaverna and her husband Louis, Lori (Schiazza) Longo, Dana Walker and her husband Larry, and Victor Longo and his partner Lori Jean Rossi. Beloved grandfather of Liza (Longo) Rieman and her husband T.J., Ava Macchiaverna, Nicky Longo, Lawrence Walker, Lana Macchiaverna, Luca Longo, Sophia Longo, and Giana Longo. Also survived by dozens and dozens of beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
His family would love nothing more than to provide him with a big “sendoff”, but unfortunately this is negated by the times we live. A small private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
