He was born in Camden, NJ on September 2, 1942 to the late Dorothy Mathern (nee Wojtkowiak) and Louis Mathern.
Rich attended school in the Camden School District. After high school, Rich worked as a machinist for Lonergan for over 30+ years and on the weekends was a drummer and vocalist for the band “The Sounds” playing weddings and events. After Lonergan was acquired and operations moved out of the area, Rich worked for Dal Tile as an inside sales specialist until his retirement.
Rich enjoyed spending time with his family. He could always be found on the ballfield watching and enjoying his grandsons’ ball games when they were young. Rich also enjoyed boating, fishing, and time at the firing range. He took great pride in having the perfectly manicured lawn and the cleanest car around. He could be found tinkering around with lawn mowers and other equipment ensuring the oil was always changed on time and every piece of equipment was properly cleaned and maintained.
Rich was married for 62 years to his beloved wife, Sandra Mathern who will miss him dearly. They were married on September 22, 1962 and lived in Camden, NJ for 14 years before moving to Pennsauken in 1976. During their years together, Richard had 2 children: his son Michael Mathern (Karen) of Fort Myers, FL, and his son Gary Mathern (Bobbi) of Moorestown, NJ. He also had 4 grandchildren: Dr. Ryan (Jenna) Mathern of Pawley’s Island, SC, Mitchell (Amy) Mathern of Moorestown, NJ, Chad Mathern of Moorestown NJ, and Dylan Mathern of Magnolia, NJ. Richard had 1 great-grandson, Archibald Mathern of Pawley’s Island, SC.
