Gladys was born in Scurry County Texas in the Big Sulfer Community on July 7, 1932, daughter to C.W. and Ora Mae Garrett Claxton.
Most people remember seeing Gladys with a big smile while working at both the Mitchell County Library and the Scurry County Library. Gladys was a family first woman, a loving devoted wife and an awesome mother and grandmother. She made it her purpose in life to teach her family what it meant to love deeply and passionately, while making sure to keep up with the times and be a very progressive grandma. She taught her family not only love, but how to work hard and keep their faith in the Lord strong. Her joy for life helped her to put smiles on people’s faces and she was always making others laugh. She was a fun grandma who sometimes even acted silly and youthful, learning to ski at the tender age of 65. She enjoyed Christmas more than most, singing and listening to Christmas music year round. She was a radiant woman whose voice would stand out in the crowd which made it so that her grandchildren knew that she was there being their biggest fan, no matter what they were doing. She will be dearly missed by those she loved and that loved her until they meet again.
Gladys is survived by her husband of 65 years whom she married on March 1, 1952 in Colorado City, Aeron Oden, by a daughter Kathy Kennedy and husband Forrest of Abilene, and by her grandchildren Jennifer Ritchey of Seattle Washington, Kristen Vian of Edmond Oklahoma and Josh Ritchey of Stephenville, as well as by her great grandchildren Carter, Gentry, Cohen, Clyne, Calum, and Autry. Also surviving is her brother Wayne Claxton of Colorado City and a sister Juanice Claxton Peach of Frisco.
She was preceded in death by her son Theron, and by her brothers C.A. “Audavae” Claxton and Alvin Milborn Claxton.
A funeral for Gladys will be held on Saturday, February 24th at 2 pm at the Kiker Seale Funeral home with the family holding a visitation from 12 noon until the time of the service.
