Alberta Frances Blohm (Orwig), much beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed peacefully into the arms of the angels on July 5, 2025 in Monument, Colorado. She passed in her home with her daughter, Mary, holding her hand, and her ever-faithful dog, Julie, right by her side. Alberta was born to the late Albert and Victoria “Dory” Orwig (Andrzejewska) on July 29, 1926 in Baltimore, Maryland. She has one precious sister, Marlene “Sam” Copeland (Orwig) of Jessup, Maryland.
As a young woman, Alberta was employed as an executive secretary by Brigadier General Lacey V. Murrow, brother of famed broadcast journalist, Edward R. Murrow. She worked for General Murrow in his capacity as vice president of the Association of American Railroads, in Washington, D.C.
Alberta married the love of her life, Charles Edward Blohm on December 20, 1953. They had one daughter, Mary Margaret, and settled in Oxon Hill, Maryland. In 1973 to 1977, the family was able to travel extensively throughout Europe when Ed, working with IBM, was relocated to a position in Paris, France. Alberta loved her time in Paris, especially the cafes and restaurants, the shopping, and entertaining—she was a marvelous cook, and extremely talented interior designer with a special eye for beauty. Upon returning to the United States, they lived in Great Falls, Virginia, and she worked part-time with the National Wildlife Federation forming many friendships along the way.
In 1995, Alberta and Ed moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado to be closer to Mary, her husband, Larry, and their four grandchildren. Alberta adored her grandchildren and they adored their “Nanny.” She provided love, support, humor, and wisdom to each of them, giving them many precious memories to cherish always. Alberta was a gorgeous woman both inside and out—a woman filled with compassion and love. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Margaret Byrd (Larry), her grandchildren Jessica Miller (Jacob), Alex Byrd (Ashton), Christian Byrd (Lillian Phelps), and Michaela Byrd (Caleb Wade). She is also survived by her three beautiful great-grandchildren, Atticus Miller, Wiley Wade, and Roman Byrd, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was much loved by all who knew her and she will be sorely missed. God bless you, sweet lady.
