Alfreda went to Bethany Nazarene College in Oklahoma and majored in English with a minor in secondary education. She graduated summa cum laude in 1955. She taught in junior high school for four years, but then determined to change to librarianship. She went to the University of Oklahoma for the M.A. in library science, receiving the Grace E. Herrick award for scholarship. She was a member of the Phi Delta Lambda and the Phi Beta Mu honor societies.
Alfreda's professional career was centered on academic librarianship and later on medical library work, both as a professional librarian and as a library director. In Oklahoma she was active in the professional library organizations, elected as president of the Oklahoma Special Libraries Organization and later as the president of the Oklahoma Library Association. She represented a multistate library group as their representative to the national Online Library Association and was on the board of the Southwestern Library Association and on the Council of the national American Library Association. Because of her activity in the professional associations, she was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award by the Oklahoma Library Association in 1984. She received the Alumni B Award of Bethany Nazarene College in 1977.
Alfreda worked in government medical libraries in Oklahoma (Civil Aeromedical Institute) and Colorado (Evans Army Community Hospital in Colorado Springs and Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver).
Although her professional work was extensive, her family was her most important effort. She married Terry Wuester in 1952 and Gordon Hanna in 1960. She had three children: Terry (Phyllis), Alfred (Cindy), and Christie Zayac (Mike).
Her three grandchildren were especially important to her and were often in her home: Mallory (Triplett-Schrattenholzer), Lauren, and Brennan. Her sister, Geraldine Huhnke, preceded her in death after living in the Hanna home for 15 years.
Early childhood was Alfreda's avocation. She cared for her grandchildren, taught 3's and 4's in church, wrote lesson plans for preschool religious education, and loved them passionately.
Memorial Service will be held at Tri-Lakes United Methodist Church, 20256 Hunting Downs Way, Monument, CO, 80132, at 3 p.m. on December 2nd.
