

Alice M. Smart passed away peacefully on December 6, 2015 in Colorado Springs at the wonderful age of 102. She was born in Springfield, Colorado on October 31, 1913. Proceeding her in death were her parents, Arthur and Bertie Smart, her brothers Otis, Roy, and William and sisters Ethel and Zenobia, and a niece Zora.
About the age of 6, Alice and her family moved to Colorado Springs. She graduated from Colorado Springs High School. After graduating from Blair Business College, Alice was recruited by the United States Government to come work in Washington, DC as a file clerk. In 1973 after 32 years of service, she retired and moved back to Colorado Springs and her family.
Alice loved to walk. She went just about anywhere her feet would take her. She was a regular participant at the senior meals programs throughout the city. She enjoyed the friendships she made there. Volunteering was one of her favorite things to do. She found opportunities through First United Methodist Church, the Senior Center, Women’s Club of Colorado Springs and the CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association.
She also loved to travel. Cruises were one of her favorites! Paris, England, Alaska and Hawaii were a few places she visited. Alice’s avid love of books also took her on many journeys. She often was reading 2 or 3 books at one time. She sought out information from many sources. She had an amazing memory and would share anything you would talk to her about.
Alice’s life in her assisted living apartment was perfect for her. She discovered a love of playing games and visiting with residents and staff was fun for her. She often had a spring in her step and said she was dancing! Finding her in her room to visit was challenging. You never knew where she would be because she was always busy.
Cherished memories will be held by her nephews George (Frankie) Smart and Keith (Shari) Smart, of La Veta, Co., Nieces Geraldine Griffith of Colorado Springs, and Charlotte (Jerry) Mason of Tehachapi, CA., As well as a host of wonderful Great, Great Great and Great Great Great Nieces and Nephews and many friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 10, from 4:00 -7:00PM, at Swan -Law Funeral directors, 501 N. Cascade, Colorado Springs. A Celebration of Life, will be held on Friday, December 11, at 11:00AM at Swan Law.
Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the Children’s Programs at First United Methodist Church, 420 North Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80903
