

Alyda “Lee” Powell, passed away February 7, 2016 at the age of 99 years. Mrs. Powell was an Artist and Art Educator. She retired from District 11. She wanted to be an artist from age 4 and continued painting until the time of her passing.
Born August 31, 1916, Mrs. Powell was born in Valmyer, Illiniois to Philip and Mathilde Klein. Alyda was married to Earle R. Powell January 16, 1944 in Guffort, Mississippi. They observed their 60 years together shortly before Earle passed away.
She is survived by two sons, Ken R. of Athens, GA and David P. of Colorado Springs; two Daughters in Law, Donna and Gail Ann; 7 grandchildren & six great-grandchildren. Alyda’s 2 sisters, Manilla Campbell and Marie Whittle, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Powell was active in the art world in Colorado. She was a past member of Colorado Springs Art Guild, The Fine Art Center, as well as the organizer of twenty art women, known as the “Collage 20”, which existed some twenty-six years ago. She exhibited for many years, bringing prizes in Montana, Pueblo, Own Your Own Shows, The Fine Arts Center, Colorado Springs as well as the Rental Gallery. She won first prize at the Colorado State Fair in the professional class in 1962 and 1966.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 1:00 PM, Swan-Law Cascade Chapel. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs.
