Barbara was born on April 7, 1935 on Chicago’s North Side to Herbert and Henrietta Branton Hansen. Upon graduating from Von Steuben High School in 1952, she attended Lake Forest College, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Barbara received her degree in art, which provided her great joy in many forms for the rest of her life.
Barbara married Fredric Roeming in 1957. They enjoyed 53 wonderful years together. Shortly after they married, Fred reentered the US Army and for 20 years with 17 moves, Barbara raised her family and performed the many responsibilities associated with being an officer’s wife. While juggling it all, Barbara still found the time to lecture at Weight Watchers for over 8 years. In 1978, Fred retired from the army and together, the couple selected Monument, CO as their new home, where Barbara immediately became active in her community and church.
In 1981, Barbara showcased her grit and tenacity by organizing the group called Citizens for Controlled Planning. The group gathered all three Tri-Lake communities and successfully sued the County Commissioners for breaking the law in favor of a developer. Barbara also served as the Activities Director for the Woodmoor Improvement Association and enjoyed sharing her love for her community with others. Upon joining the Monument Community Church, she dedicated her life to her Lord and was part of the first group to be trained to be a Stephen’s Minister. In addition, Barbara was elected to be a church elder and performed pastoral care at Memorial Hospital. She considered it a joy to share God’s love and hope with others.
Barbara’s love of art was highlighted in all she did. She owned Custom Frocks, which represented a women’s custom clothing trunk show company, for 5 years, where she rose to the number two sales producer in the country. At home, she enjoyed knitting, crewel and needle-point embroidery and painting. In her community, Barbara volunteered as a docent at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center. After 10 years of service, she elected to be a Docent Emeritus and continued to volunteer at organizations such as Palmer Lake Arts Group, Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts, Santa Rita Art League (Green Valley, AZ) and Tubac Center for the Arts (Tubac, AZ). .
Her final art triumph started in the turn of the century when she decided to once again study the painting of abstract art. Barbara’s creativity of spirit, passion for beautiful color combinations and love of God and His creations all came forth on canvas. She participated in many shows and won many ribbons, prizes and a best of show and delighted in filling other’s homes with her art.
Barbara was greatly loved and will be missed by many. She is survived by her husband, Fred (Woodmoor); her two children, Jessica (Amherst Jct, WI) and Branton (Coffeeville, TX); eight grandchildren and a sister, Carol (Rochestor, MN).
