The oldest of 4 children, she was born to Bill and Elizabeth Summers in an old chicken coop that her dad bought and renovated into a house in Gove, Kansas.
The family moved quite a bit through her childhood, eventually spending her high school years between Monument and Elbert Colorado. She graduated from Elbert High School in 1955 as salutatorian of her class.
Soon afterwards she met Roy Mockerman and they married on October 14, 1956. They were married for 55 years when Roy died in 2011 still holding her hand.
To this union were born 4 children. James Franklin, Timothy Roy, Matthew Will, and Catherin Marie. And those 4 gave her 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and1 (soon to be 2) great-great- grandchildren.
Not only did she raise 4 children, she grew legendary gardens, taught Sunday School and VBS at church, helped with the women’s club, took on jobs whenever money got tight, and read every Louis L’Amour book ever written at least 4 times. During the school year she almost always babysat some of the teachers kids. She loved doing that and 50 some years later still kept in touch with some of them.
In 89 years she never had an abundance of anything except love. She never forgot anyone’s birthday or anniversary, and gave out hugs (even when they weren’t deserved). She always said “ I Love You” and fittingly those were the last words to touch her lips.
We’ll miss you Grandma Bernie!
