With immense sadness at his passing and immeasurable pride in the life he lived, we announce that Brandon Vaughn Wurns, age 33, died unexpectedly of an unpredictable cardiac anomaly on 30 December 2017, in Colorado Springs at the home he shared with his wife, Holly Palmer.
Born in Sylvania, Ohio, on 3 March 1984, Vaughn was the son of Lori Ann Horner and Wayne Lackey. Vaughn is survived by his wife Holly Palmer, his dog Zoë Batman, his parents, his sister Katie (Matthew) Farber, nephew Harlan Farber, brother Steven Lackey, grandmother Phyllis “G-Funk” Horner, many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and his parents-in-law, Clark and Melanie Palmer. He is preceded in death by his Granddad Harlan L Horner.
A proud graduate of the University of Florida (Go Gators!), Vaughn completed a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology in 2006 and a Master of Physician Assistant Studies in 2010. He worked as an emergency physician assistant at Front Range Emergency Specialists, and his knowledge and skill contributed to the competent and life-saving care he provided to his patients. A combat veteran of Afghanistan, Vaughn also served in the active duty Army and Army National Guard as a physician assistant.
Vaughn loved the mountains, fishing, hotdogs, woodworking, and his dog Zoë Batman, but most especially, Vaughn loved his wife, Holly Palmer. He devoted his life to providing for her, supporting her goals, and being her best friend. Holly and Vaughn were married on 7 February 2014, and through a mutual love of Legos, dogs, Guardians of the Galaxy, Tex-Mex food, and devoting their lives to the service of others, Holly and Vaughn made each other’s lives complete.
In accordance with Vaughn’s wishes, there will not be a funeral or memorial service. Vaughn would have preferred his loved ones honor him by spending their time and money doing something they love. In lieu of flowers or gifts, Vaughn would have wanted his friends and loved ones to make donations in his name to a charity supporting veterans or animals. Holly recommends Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing of Colorado Springs, where Vaughn had volunteered, Team Rubicon, or your local chapter of the Humane Society.
“Don't brood too much, son. For your parents' sake, be strong. Always remember -- life has to go on.” - Batman
