Clyde attended Longmont Public Schools and played on the 1942 state basketball championship team in his senior year. He started college at Colorado A&M (Fort Collins, Colorado) where he was active in ROTC and his fraternity, Sigma Nu. He served in the US Army during World War II in Europe from 1943-46. After returning, he completed his civil engineering degree in 1948.
Clyde and Shirley Ann Schumacher (born Laramie, Wyoming, June 3, 1928) met in Denver when one of his fraternity brothers invited a group of nurses to a formal party. They were married on June 24th, 1949 and were together for 38 years until her death.
Clyde worked as an aerospace engineer for Martin-Marietta, concurrently earning his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Colorado State University. He moved to Colorado Springs from Wheatridge, Colorado after losing Shirley in 1987. After completing the final year of his career working for Martin-Marietta at Falcon Air Station, he retired in 1989.
Clyde was the ultimate Colorado sports fan and devoted follower of the Denver Broncos and Denver Nuggets. He was an avid golfer into his late 80s. He was fortunate to enjoy a long, healthy life filled with the love of a close family, friends, loyal dogs, and sports.
He is survived by his children Donnie Vee Espinoza (Steve) and Brian Grady Richmond (Suzanne), along with grandchildren Lucas Richmond (Cecilie), Erin Foster, Alisa Newton (Brian) and Michael Espinoza, plus four great-grandchildren Thomas, Madalyn, Tanner, and Natalie. Grandpa will be missed by all.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 25th, 1:00pm at MacKenzie Place, 1605 Elm Creek View, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80907.
