David Lawrence Vaeth March 15, 1932 - March 19, 2020

David “Dave” Lawrence Vaeth went to be with the Lord on March 19, 2020 peacefully in his home surrounded by his family after a long illness with Bulbar Palsy.

Born in St. Joseph, MO, he lived his whole life in Colorado, attending St. Mary's schools then graduating from Colorado College. He proudly served in the Air Force. David taught 5th grade at Ute Pass Elementary for 28 years.

A farm boy at heart, he loved raising his milk cows and other animals on his 17 acre home. He also split his time at his apple orchard in Alcalde, New Mexico.

He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Anna Mae, son Alexander Vaeth (Jennifer Mapes), daughter Victoria Garcia (Adislado “J”), son Carl Vaeth, and 2 grandchildren, MaKenna and Kian Garcia.

A memorial service is postponed to be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuge at slvrefuges.org.

I'll never forget riding around with him and a few other students in his peeling, pale green? "UPS" style van collecting boxes for the annual International Fair in the gymnasium (all the way to Colorado Springs and back sans seatbelts and doors?) And everyone always looked forward to making pinatas in his classroom. One of my all-time favorite teachers. RIP.

I remember Mr Vaeth as one of my FAVORITE teachers at Ute Pass Elementary. He was the coolest man ever. He made learning fun and had patience with us. We use to ride around in a junky lil white van and pick up newspapers for recycling , the best time ever. I also spent time with him as he volunteered at the Community Cupboard in W.P. This earth was blessed with his presence, Thank you Mr.Vaeth, my life has been blessed because of your generosity from your heart and
contributions to this planet.
Much Love and gratitude

Mr. Vaeth was a great teacher and truly cared about his students. I will never forget working together as a class to save enough newspapers to go on our field trip and getting to listen to Bill Cosby comedy records on Friday if we were good. "Cake is great" .

Sending sincerest condolences to Anna Mae and all the family. David took care of our family cabin, Minihaven, for my grandmother, Minnie Phipps, and then for many more years before retiring from this job. As the only member of the Phipps-Carr-Altman families who lives in Colorado Springs, I was the contact person. I thoroughly enjoyed the visits I had with David, and found him to be a fascinating gentleman. R.I.P. Mr. Vaeth.

Oh, I’m sad. I adored him as my 6th grade teacher - the second year after Ute Pass Elementary opened! I am so glad we were able to get reacquainted again after all those years, too. And my daughter got to meet him when they picked out pumpkins when she was at Ute Pass Elementary. That meant a lot to me. He was super intelligent- and I didn’t know until fairly recently that he had attended Colorado College. I will miss you, Mr. Vaeth. 😪❣️

Who can forget David traveling around in his pick up truck collecting enough pumpkins from various farms to fill the field by his house so that every student at Ute Pass Elementary could experience his version of a Pumpkin Patch. What a special memory! Such a special man.

Mr. Vaeth was a wonderful 5th grade teacher and I'm blessed I got to experience that. I'll never forget saving every newspaper I could to re-cycle so our class could afford to go to The Stock Show in Denver. What an adventure! May the wonderful memories carry all those that love Mr. Vaeth through these difficult times. Xoxo

1972 our family had moved to Cascade after school had started. Mr Vaeth was my home room teacher. He had a way about him that you knew you were not alone. He helped me through a rough time in my life . He has always held a special place in my heart.

My children and I could never forget Mr Veath! He was a great teacher and a model of a person who taught children what really counted. You were blessed to have him in your life as all the children he taught were also.
