Dawn’s parents brought her into the world surrounded by music, love and a zest for life. She grew up singing with her parents, friends, and family at home, in the car, on the beach and in front of audiences. When not singing, Dawn took dance lessons for many years under the instruction of Barbara Ellis. Throughout her life she was a diehard Denver Broncos fan and became a dedicated follower of the Dave Matthews Band. She travelled avidly from childhood and developed a particular fondness for beach destinations. In high school she sang her way to being named Miss Colorado Springs.
Dawn was raised to be curious, compassionate, and practical. Dawn studied Vocal Performance and Psychology at Arizona State University and later earned a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Denver and became a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst, Behavioral Sciences, from Florida Institute of Technology.
In her first position after graduating from ASU, she worked as a Mental Health Worker at Cedar Springs Hospital, where she met Charles Thurmond. They were a perfect pair and married in 1998. They enjoyed 20 years of marriage together sharing a love of travel, music, their pets and family. Dawn loved that in marrying Charles, she gained wonderful children and grandchildren. Charles’ children (already grown) became close friends and family to her. She was tremendously proud of her grandkids and loved being a ‘Cool Grandma.’
Dawn was dedicated to advocating for those in need. She was a passionate Behavioral Consultant for children at Colorado Springs District 11 for nearly 20 years. Dawn was a licensed real estate agent serving clients, friends, and family for the last 9 years. What Dawn loved most about real estate was making new friendships and memories with all of those she worked with. In June, Dawn completed her term as President of the Governing Board of Civa Charter School. She was proud to have overcome a fear of public speaking at the 2024 Graduation. In the last year, she started writing a book on dealing with grief. Having lost both her parents and husband too early she was sure she could turn her journey into help for others.
She is preceded in passing by her husband Charles Eiber Thurmond; parents, Mary and Gary Eiber; grandparents Gary Sr. and Rosemary Eiber and Marie and Joe Taiber.
She is survived by Stepchildren Pam (Cole) Thurmond-Doupe, Angela (Robert) Thurmond- Gallop, Becky (Bob) Thurmond-Maynard; as well as eight Step Grandchildren Christopher, Lauren, Kayla, Abby, Melanie, Jakub, Nathaniel, and Emileigh; Aunts Pam (Terry) McClelland and Jill (John) McKune, Cousin Garry (Carrie) McClelland; and God-Daughter Camryn Hyde. Additionally, countless friends that she held near and dear to her.
Dawn departs from us far too young, but certainly she is glad to be rejoined with husband Charles and parents Mary and Gary. Dawn’s positive energy and joy for life will be missed by all who were lucky to know her. Services will be held on July 20th at Hillside Gardens 1006 S Institute St, Colorado Springs from 11:00am to 2:00pm.
