Throughout her childhood Dorothy lived in Illinois with her parents, Gladys and Henry Emsing and her older brother and sister Carolyn and John. Do graduated from Urbana High School and the University of Illinois. While in college she was a member of the honorary society, DAR, WAC, and Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She graduated with honors with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Math.
After college Do was recruited by IBM but turned down the opportunity after meeting her future husband. Do and Glenn Thomas Reynolds were married December 16, 1945 and enjoyed over 60 years of marriage and family life. Glenn passed away in April 2006.
Do and Glenn had a wonderful life together. Initially, they settled in the south where Glenn helped his brother in a crop-dusting business. But after a short stay, they returned to Urbana. They had three daughters, Glenda Ann Tooley (Ed), Pamela Sue Thode (Bob), and Marguerite Jane Ferris (Dennis). Dorothy was very active in Urbana. She had many part-time jobs such as typing term papers, assisting in her childrens’ school, her Catholic Church, and even had some political ambitions as she ran for Urbana City Clerk.
In 1959, Do’s family moved to Boulder, Colorado.
Do worked at NOAH as a computer programmer, ahead of her time, and later as a Computer Programming supervisor for the National Bureau of Standards for over 30 years. She also had an antique business, selling antiques from a little shop called Trunkline Antiques, and did estate sales.
In 1992, Dorothy and Glenn moved to Colorado Springs. Dorothy found it easy to make friends and get involved. She joined many groups including bridge groups (her Passion), book club, bible study, women’s golf, Gourmet Club, and others. She even served as President of the Gleneagle Women’s Club. She also found special joy and warmth in St Peters Catholic Community in Monument and attended mass each weekend.
The most amazing thing about ‘Do’ was her love for family. Family came first for Dorothy, and she inspired her family and was always fun to be around. Christmas was her favorite holiday and shopping for presents was a year-long adventure. Do was a fabulous cook and loved having social gatherings. She had a laugh one could never forget. One of Dorothy’s favorite activities was playing games with her eight grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. She had a keen intellect and was tough to beat at games. She encouraged everyone in her family to go to college and was very supportive of her grandchildren’s events. She gave strength, faith in God, and love to her family. We miss you Mom.
