Dwayne was the oldest of 8 children and became responsible for his family at 14 years of age due to his father’s poor health. He spoke often of spending time at his grandparents with his cousin, LeEtta, sitting and listening to the “Back to the Bible” broadcast from Lincoln, NE. Prayers were spoken in Swedish. Dwayne and LeEtta would spend many nights with their grandparents. Dwayne would sleep with his grandpa and LeEtta with her grandma and as they were falling to sleep, you could hear each say: “Goodnight papa, goodnight mama, goodnight LeEtta, goodnight Dwayne.”
Even as a young child Dwayne was found working on cars and farming machinery. He would undo bolts and nuts on farm equipment, laying them down in a precise order. His dad would find him and have to put the puzzle of bolts back together. This interest continued and became a life-long career and hobby. On Dec. 10, 1947, at the age of 17, Dwayne entered the service working as an Army Air Corp mechanic in the United States and Germany. He was honorably discharged Sept. 3, 1952.
In 1948, while on leave in Hebron, Dwayne met Violette Fry. Many letters were exchanged while he served his overseas duty. Upon his return Violette and he were engaged and married on April 24, 1953.
Dwayne began his Civil Servant career as a mechanic at the Nebraska Ordinance Plant transferring to the Lincoln Air Force Base in 1954. In 1965 the Base closed and he transferred to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs retiring in Dec. 1984.
Dwayne’s faith in God grew from the strong Christian influence of his grandparents. Once married, he and Violette attended church regularly and in fact were charter members of Capital City Christian Church in Lincoln and Academy Christian Church in Colorado Springs and Dwayne was the building chairman of the Falcon Christian Church, also of Colorado Springs. He organized the “Bus Ministry” at Central Christian Church in the late 1960’s. He served as a youth sponsor, deacon, and elder. He witnessed God’s love while working in his garage evenings and weekends, while visiting those in nursing homes and hospitals and through his daily living. He was known to many as a prayer warrior.
Dwayne is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Violette, three daughters and four grandchildren. VeEtta Bradley (Manfred), Vickie Anderson Olson, Barbara Eastman (Michael), Jason Eastman, Kristin Nelson (Andy), Jeffrey Eastman and Dillon Olson. He is further survived by his brother, Laverne, brother and sister-in-laws, Kenneth Krakow, Don and Hazel Gaston and Jean Delaney as well as many special cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
