Edie went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 29, 2013, after a long and energetic life. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Monday, October 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs. Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1910, Edie and family moved to Colorado Springs where she lived for most of her 103 years, the last fifteen of which were at the Medalion Retirement Community.
At age 25, she was married to John Arthur Sampson who predeceased her. Although she had no children, Edie invested significant time with family members, especially her grandnieces and grandnephew, as well as with many local friends.
Edie was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, stewardship commitment team member, in the Lois Circle, and Open Door Sunday school class.
Most of her career was spent in federal civil service from which she retired after serving as Executive Secretary to Commander of Naval Forces, Headquarters NORAD. Edie was subsequently an active member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and served as chaplain for the State Confederation of Chapters for ten years.
Her primary recreational outlet for over twenty-five years was square dancing. Edie was a charter member of both the Single Swingers and Mountain Swingers square dance clubs. Later in her 80’s and 90’s, she joined the “Mountain Mamas”, a group of about twenty ladies who entertained by singing and dancing.
Mrs. Sampson is survived by two nephews—Major General Malcolm E. Ryan Jr., USAF (Ret), and Charles O. Bennett, Homeland, CA; two nieces—Patricia Rabban, Glendora, CA, and Barbara Bennett, Denton, TX; as well as several grandnieces and a grandnephew.
Memorial contributions may be made to Deacon’s Fund, First Presbyterian Church, Colorado Springs, CO.
