Florentino Savala, Jr. loved his wife, Marjorie, his daughters, his grandchildren, his family from California, and telling people his name was “Jose Jimenez.” Tino loved going to church, he loved music from the 70’s (especially the Bee Gees), and he loved a well-made steak and Mexican food.
Tino did not like being away from his wife, having his hair messed up, being cold, or when his sister called him “Junior.”
Tino would want young men to know that it is important to be a gentleman, visit Manny’s Barbershop regularly, and always tuck in their shirts. He would want young women to know that they should honor their mamas, dress classy, and don’t fight with their sisters.
If it came to a game between the Rockies and the Dodgers, he always rooted for the Dodgers even while the rest of his family was dressed in Rockies’ gear.
Tino also was a devoted Christian husband, father, member and elder of Security Christian Church (which became Pikes Peak Christian Church), taught Sunday school for over 30 years, and loved making people smile. Even after Alzheimer’s had taken so much away from him, he still had his jokes and wanted to make people smile. Tino had a way of making people feel appreciated, accepted, and loved.
Tino leaves behind his wife, Marjorie, his daughters Tina (Russ Spicer), DeeDee (Chris Emmer), and Judi (Byrne Wright), his grandchildren Cody, Jared (Michelle), & Christiana Spicer, Maggie (Jake Allen), Teller (Shelby), Joseph Emmer, and Jesse, Isaac, and Sam Wright. He also leaves two great-grandchildren, Jonah and Eliza Allen.
Tino was born in Atwood, CA on Valentine’s Day 1936 and raised in Brea, CA. In 1942, Tino’s first job was picking oranges with his Tio Jerry. He was a good student, an outstanding speller, was musically inclined and played sports. He loved baseball & softball, bowling, golf, playing pinochle with friends, and watching his grandkids play sports.
Tino met Marjorie when they were both in the Air Force at Offutt AFB, Nebraska in 1958. On April 1, 1961 Tino and Marjorie married at Offutt – not even realizing that it was April Fool’s Day. They would have celebrated their 59th year of marriage in a few weeks.
Tino served his country faithfully for over 20 years in both the Air Force and the Army here in the US as well as in Korea and Vietnam. When he was deployed, he would send recordings of him singing Bobby McGee and Elvis songs for his wife and daughters to listen to before bedtime and whenever we missed him. He worked for the state of Colorado at the Department of Social Services, at Memorial Hospital as an admissions manager, and at Fountain Ft. Carson School District as a special needs para-educator.
Tino peacefully went to be with Jesus on March 12, 2020 surrounded by his family, leaving a strong legacy of faith in God. He was 84 years old.
A Celebration of Life is to be held on Saturday, August 8th, 2020 at 10:00am at Pikes Peak Christian Church, 4955 Bradley Road, Colorado Springs (Security/Widefield), 80911 with Military Honors. His urn will be placed privately at Pikes Peak National Cemetery.
Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association -- act.alz.org.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain,
for the old order of things has passed away.
