

Frances K. Dewell (Wyss), of Quincy, IL died January 9, 2012 in Colorado Springs, CO. She was born February 12, 1926 to Lylia B. (Miller) Wyss and John Fred Wyss in Smithton, Missouri. She graduated from Richmond, Missouri High School, Bachelor of Arts, William Jewell College, and Masters of Elementary Education, University of Illinois. Further studies were made at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, Western Illinois University, Central Missouri State University, Truman University, and Quincy University.
She married Howard J. Dewell June 14, 1947. She was a retired elementary teacher from Quincy Public Schools. Also, she served as a Reading Specialist in various schools for 32 years in the public school system.
She was a member of Women’s City Club, Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary teachers’ sorority, Adams County Retired Teachers, Life Member of NEA, IFT, Grace Whipple Order of Eastern Star, member of Beta Sigma Omicron and Zeta Tau Alpha sororities, former member of AAUW, and Faith Presbyterian Church of Quincy, IL. She was Past President of Women’s Teachers’ Club, Past President of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers’ Sorority, Past Worthy Matron of Grace Whipple Order of Eastern Star, board member of Women’s City Club, and recipient of Diamond Scholarship Badge of Beta Sigma Omicron, and Past officer of AAUW. She sang in choirs of churches, Richmond High School, William Jewell College, and University of Illinois.
Her main interests were music, reading, and needlework.
Survivors include two daughters: Linda McBain, and her husband Jerry, Montgomery, Texas and Jennifer Flaharty, and her husband Weldon, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her brother, Milford Wyss, and his wife Mrs. Clara Ann Wyss, Richmond, Missouri; 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild: Drs. Jeremy and Katie McBain and son Malcolm, Charleston, Illinois, Mr. Patrick McBain, San Marcos, Texas, Ms. Erinn Flaharty, Colorado Springs, Colorado; nieces and nephews: Janet (Wyss) LaBarr, Richmond, Missouri, Judy (Wyss) Young, Windsor, Missouri, Kay (Wyss) Taylor, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Larry Wyss, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Steve Haendiges, Massachusetts, Jeannine Haendiges, Salem, Massachusetts, Brian Haendiges, New Canton, Connecticut.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Fred Wyss, sister-in-law, Mrs. Ross (Lorraine) Wyss, brother Ross B. Wyss, Independence, Missouri and her sister, Lila L. (Wyss) Haendiges, Palmer, Massachusetts.
Arrangements under the direction of Mountain View Mortuary, Colorado Springs, CO. Cremation rites were performed. Private memorial services will be held in Richmond, Missouri Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to: Faith Presbyterian Church Music Department, Quincy, IL.
