Frederick "Rusty" Russell Morrison

Raised in the small town of Miami, Oklahoma, Rusty learned early the value of steady work and purposeful dreams. He worked at the local Coca-cola bottling company to save for college, already showing the thoughtful determination that would mark his life. His curiosity and love of how things worked were evident in passions that stayed with him—engineering, cars, and farming—and in the hands-on joy he took in converting VW Bugs into dune buggies simply for the pleasure of building something new.

Rusty built a remarkable career as an oil field engineer, working on five continents and holding multiple operational records for production, depth, and length. Over the years, he worked for Otis Engineering, Halliburton, Arco, and BP. Wherever he went, he carried an explorer’s spirit—adaptable, steady, and at ease among people from every background—because engineering was, to him, a universal culture that could connect anyone. He embraced each country with respect while still keeping his Southerness, even in the way he mispronounced the local language; he always tried, and he always made room for conversation.

For 44 years, Rusty was married to Mary, and together they raised three sons: Thomas, Jeff, and Brannon. Rusty loved deeply and gave generously, sacrificing to provide each of his boys the best life possible, even when it came at a cost to his own career and retirement plans. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren and is also survived by his sister.

Rusty’s friendliness was never performative; it was simply who he was—always ready for a conversation, always willing to listen, and often finding common ground where others might not. That same openhearted steadiness showed in his care for dogs in need of a home. He rescued them, trained them, loved them, and then helped them find the forever families they deserved.

Wherever Rusty lived, he was historically active in local Assembly of God churches and in supporting ministries close to home. He volunteered as a tutor for kids in need, bringing particular delight to math and the confidence it could build in a young person. Each Christmas, he played Santa for local orphanages, offering joy in a way that was both simple and unforgettable. He also poured himself into the everyday moments that shape a family, including avidly coaching his kids’ teams—showing up, encouraging, and making sure others felt seen.

Rusty’s legacy is also carried in the lives of hundreds of teens he impacted as a leader of Friday Night Live in Jakarta. FNL was a weekly Bible study for more than 100 teens—a place of meaningful community, worship of JESUS, and learning about GOD’s overwhelming love. Through FNL, many came to know JESUS, including Rusty’s youngest son. In that work, Rusty’s thoughtfulness and steady courage were evident: he invested in people, trusted that love could take root, and made space for faith to be lived with sincerity.

The family expresses gratitude for Ron Warren—Rusty’s best friend—whose friendship across multiple continents, kids’ weddings, and phone calls was the highlight of each month. The family also thanks Stephen, the Elmers & Christiana for their support of Mary during this time.
