Near the end of the great depression, Clarence and Fredia Narragon went to California, hoping for better things. This is how Fredrick Roger Narragon came to be born on July 7, 1939, in Salinas, California. The family retuned to Nebraska shortly thereafter. A brother, Marvin Keith was born in 1942.
The family lived in a number of different locations, eventually ending up in Colorado Springs in 1955. One final move back to Nebraska resulted in Fred graduating from Broken Bow high school, class of 1957, followed by a move back to the Springs.
In 1958, Fred joined U. S. Navy, and was trained as an electrician. Brother Marvin joined the Navy in 1960 and they both served on the same ship. In 1962, they were sent, for the first time, to Vietnam. This enabled them to also visit Hawaii, Guam, the Phillipines, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Join the navy and see the world! Later, Fred would be stationed on another ship operating from Sasebo, Japan. They returned to Vietnam several times patrolling the coastline and boarding vessels to check them out. As a senior NCO, Fred often was armed with a Thompson submachine gun. Fortunately, he never had to use it.
Fred left the navy and returned to Colorado Springs in 1967. He had an art degree from El Paso Community College. He did thousands of sketches and drawings, but never made it a profession. Fred met and became friends with Ernestine Wilson, a neighbor with 4 young girls: Wrayanne, Sandra, Tina, and Karen. Over the years, Fred spent a lot of time with their family, joining in many activities through the years, including the girls children and grandchildren.
Fred was a person who was always offering to help and did the best he could.
