Gustavo M. Alvarado, 57, passed away on August 5, 2014, in Colorado Springs, CO. Gus was born in Havana, Cuba, and came to the United States with his parents in 1961. Gus always said that he was living the American dream. He grew up in Union City, NJ, and attended St. Peters College before joining the Navy in 1977. In 1980 he married the love of his life, Hilda, and settled in Northern Virginia while on active duty. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland in 1983, and lived in northern Virginia with his wife and two daughters for 14 years before moving out West. Gus and his wife have lived in northern Colorado Springs for twenty years.
Gus was passionate about the San Francisco Giants and started rooting for them at the age of five purely because their name also started with the letter “G.” He was an avid reader, a lover of history and politics, and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family, to whom he was absolutely devoted. There was nothing more important to him, and nothing he was more proud of.
Gus was loved and will be deeply missed by his wife, Hilda, his two daughters, Lindsay and Lauren, his sister “Tica,” and his two favorite pups in the world, Lacy and Archer. There are countless other family members and friends who will also miss Gus’s smile, relentless charm, and ever-present sense of humor.
A celebration of Gus’s life will be held Saturday, August 9th, 2014 at 2pm, at Swan Law Funeral Home, 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Gus’s favorite charities: the Alzheimer’s Association, the National Stuttering Association, and the Pikes Peak Humane Society.
