Guy Joseph Dutra-Silveira

Guy J. Dutra-Silveira, who recently moved on from this life at age 73, was in many ways a modern Renaissance man, with a variety of skills and interests. Over the years, he remarked many times about what a lucky man he was.

For years he had one foot squarely in the midst of this city's cultural scene as a classical musician, with the other stuck in a muddy boot along some Colorado stream where he could quietly fly-fish.

Then there was his eldercare work. In 2015 he retired from his job as director of the Area Agency on Aging after 20 years. That organization, under the Pikes Peak Council of Governments, advocates for seniors' independence. Yet, for hundreds of evenings and weekends, he was all about classical music, as the principal oboist for the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. In the role, dapper and distinguished in a tuxedo, he played the tune-up note for his colleagues. It's a task unique to the oboe, an instrument known for its rigorous breath control and penetrating, almost human, tone. He also played with other area groups, notably the Ute Pass Chamber Players, where he developed many lasting friendships.

Still, to others in our community, Guy was known foremost as a relentless tennis player. One longtime friend, Jose Ortega, claimed that the classical musician also had "the purest classical tennis strokes of anyone" at the Memorial Park tennis courts. "Yeah, well, if that's true, why don't I beat you every time?", Guy responded with typical self-deprecation. In later years, he developed close friendships with with tennis buddies Joel Cowan, Kerwin Swenson and Malcolm Phelps from the Colorado Springs Racket Club.

Guy was diagnosed 12 years ago with stage 4 prostate cancer but was able to continue living a full life until the last 3 months, during which his health took a steep decline. He passed away on 7/13/26 at Pikes Peak Hospice inpatient unit.

Guy was born to Willis and Margaret Dutra-Silveira who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Allen, his daughter, Amy Long (Joshua) and grandson, Joseph as well as a sister, Pamela Linden (Vicki), former wife Barbara Bowen and dear friends Larry and Mary Killoran.

A celebration of Guy's life will be held on Monday, 8/17/26 from 4:00 to 6:00 at Pikes Peak Hospice Inpatient unit's El Pomar Conference room, 2550 Tenderfoot St, Colorado Springs, CO, 80906. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Pikes Peak Hospice in Guy's name.
