May 28, 1926 – June 18, 2016
Harold was born in Bent County, Colorado and lived on a dairy farm. At the age of 5 or 6, during the dust bowl years, the family moved from Karval, CO to Florissant, Co by covered wagon. This was a 112 mile journey. They were moving to Hartsel, CO but unfortunately, one of the horses died at Florissant and that’s where they settled. He loved to tell stories about this move.
At age 17, Harold enlisted in the Navy and proudly served for 3 years in the Pacific theatre during World War II. Harold was a driver of a LSD boat (one which carried troops and supplies unto shore during battles). He engaged in 2 major battles and came home safe.
After WWII, Harold completed training as a heavy duty diesel mechanic in Nashville, TN . Harold returned to Colorado Springs in 1950. Harold worked as a diesel mechanic and then later transitioned to be a cement mason at Fort Carson. He was a retired civil servant with 33 years of service.
Harold and El Nora were married August 8, 1954 and celebrated their 61st anniversary last August. They have 4 children: Diana Borden of Colorado Springs, Sharon Kinney of Wisconsin, James Borden of Cascade and Les Borden of Colorado Springs. They have 4 grandchildren and seven great grand-children.
Harold is preceded in death by his parents, Artie and Martha Borden, his sister Dorothy Sawyer and his twin brother Howard Borden. He has one living sister, Fern Pomeroy, in Seattle, WA.
Harold enjoyed his family, church activities and friends. Harold was a wonderful storyteller and loved to tell stories about his life and family. He just celebrated his 90th birthday with church friends last month. He loved his cake and ice cream.
