He was born on July 23, 1946, to John J. and Hermina (Uiterdyk) Bos of Churchill, Montana. After growing up on a farm—where he nurtured his lifelong love of animals and knack with machinery—he studied engineering at Calvin College and Montana State University. He later earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Arizona. He worked as a professional engineer in Texas, Arizona, California, Colorado, and Florida.
He met his wife, Millie, in Tucson, and they enjoyed more than 54 years of adventures together. Harv was known for his sense of humor and original dad jokes, his kindness and generosity, and his stunning nature photography, including annual (sometimes monthly) shots of Bear Lake. He loved camping, backpacking, hiking, and skiing, as well as taking road trips. He also was a runner and, in his later years, an avid pickleball player.
After retirement, he and Millie loved traveling, glamping in their fifth wheel, maintaining their land in the mountains, and volunteering at church and community organizations. Harvey served as an elder at Cragmor Christian Reformed Church, where he also taught Sunday school, led a Bible study, assisted in the nursery and with the youth group, and organized senior outings. His fun-loving, gentle spirit drew children to him, and he adored being known as the church’s “professional grandpa.”
Harvey is survived by Millie; children Monique (Lars Shriver), Nic (Tod), and Derek (Anna); grandchildren Zach, Dezerae, and Zavier; brothers Al (Joan), Loren (Gwen), and Glenn (Kathy); and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, as well as brother Ken.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 6, at 11:30 a.m. at Cragmor Christian Reformed Church, 1225 Acacia Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80907. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Crossroads Prison Ministries or Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care.
Harvey’s family are extremely grateful for the kind, caring staff at Penrose Hospital, Capron Rehab, and Pikes Peak Hospice. Even during his final illness, his sweet spirit and smile shone brightly. He was blessed to spend his last week at home, surrounded by friends and family, including his beloved grandchildren.
